Chair's Message

Welcome to the Department of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).  Our department is one of the few that is both a clinical department at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and also an academic department within VCU.

The department’s mission is three-fold, encompassing education, patient care, and research.

Our faculty are actively involved in the education at the undergraduate medical and post-graduate levels.  All third-year medical students at VCU rotate through our service.  We also have three ACGME accredited residency programs; Neurology Residency, Child Neurology Fellowship, and Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship.

As the field has evolved, our department has grown into several subspecialties including a Child Neurology division, Neuro-ophthalmology division, Neurophysiology laboratory, and an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.  Our department boasts Movement Disorder specialists, both Adult and Pediatric Neuromuscular disorder specialists, as well as Headache and Migraine specialists.

Our faculty members are not only knowledgeable with the most up-to-date treatment options; many were developed here by our faculty.  We have a commitment to research; many of our faculty are actively involved in research projects on the molecular level as well as FDA Phase II-IV clinical drug trials.

Our department believes firmly in the importance of education.  Three ACGME accredited residency programs, core Neurology, Child Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology.  All third year medical students rotate through our department.  Our department provides lectures to second year medical students including Neuroscience and board reviews.

We have 20 full-time physicians (14 Adult, 6 Child), 7 research faculty members, and 23 housestaff officers.  We have office locations and the VCU Medical College of Virginia Campus in the Ambulatory Care Center and Children’s Pavilion.  Our faculty also see patients at McGuire VAMC and Stony Point.
