About Richmond
Richmond
is a rapidly changing, continually growing community. Newcomers
arrive daily from every region of the country, attracted
by the city's central East Coast location, its temperate
southern climate, its graceful architecture, living history,
and modern convenience.
Richmond's
appeal depends as much on the city's location as on its
institutions and quality of life. Richmond is close to Atlantic
beaches, Washington, DC, Virginia's plantations and other
historic sites (Appomattox, Jamestown, and Colonial Williamsburg,
to name a few). To the south is the lush Piedmont country,
some of the richest and most productive farmland in America.
The northern border of the state forms the right bank of
the Potomac River, leading to our nation's capitol. To the
east lies the Chesapeake Bay, site of the largest naval
base on the east coast, in Norfolk. Beyond the Bay is the
Eastern Shore, a peninsula of farmland, beaches, and marshes.
To the west, just past Charlottesville – home of the University
of Virginia and Jefferson's Monticello – are the Blue Ridge
Mountains, forming the eastern rampart of the Appalachians
between Pennsylvania and Georgia and cradling the Shenandoah
Valley.
Though
the Richmond metro area has a population of about 950,000,
the core city itself is small and manageable, and the green
and pleasant suburban counties surrounding it present a
minimum of commuter trouble, and an optimum of secure, affordable
living.
The
VCUHS facilities occupy a 35-acre site in the center of
town, near the banking and entertainment districts and adjacent
to the state capitol and the governor's mansion.
Increasingly,
corporations choose to establish or relocate their headquarters
in Richmond; there are now 35 major companies here, including
many of Fortune 500 rank. Richmond is headquarters for the
Fifth Federal Reserve District and three regional banks;
nine members of the New York Stock Exchange are headquartered
here.
Business
Travel News has ranked Richmond the fastest-growing convention
site in the United States. Contributing to this distinction
is a new convention center, a conveniently located international
airport with daily flights to more than 100 cities worldwide,
and an uncongested, well maintained expressway network.
Together
with five-star hotels, beaches to the east, mountains to
the west, Washington, DC, to the north, and historic sites
everywhere, Richmond has become a premier location for many
lifestyles.
